School Boundary Proposal Affecting

LR Green Students

Issue: Voters in the Escondido Union School District passed a $46.3 million bond on the March-2002 ballot. That money is being spent to build two new schools in South Escondido (Bear Valley Middle School $21M) and Farr Elementary ($17M).  There are several other initiatives to build more schools in Escondido over the next few years but they are not funded.  The district is reviewing all boundaries and has appointed a committee to issue recommendations to the board of trustees by May or early June.

The current proposed boundary would send kids West of I-15 who are currently attending LR Green to Del Dios Middle School vice the (sometimes closer) new Bear Valley Middle School. Parents are concerned about violence and the poor learning environment at Del Dios, which consistently scores about 200 points below L.R. Green on the state's Academic Performance Index. The API is an annual score that ranks schools by showing how well each did on a variety of tests the previous spring. The index uses a scale of 200 to 1,000 and all schools are expected to eventually reach 800. The latest scores show Del Dios at 641 and L.R. Green at 842. Del Dios suspended 124 students and expelled five students last year, while L.R. Green had 25 student suspensions and no expulsions.

Proposed schools:

Bear Valley Middle School (2004-2005 opening) next to LR Green

Farr Elementary ((2004-2005 opening) at the corner of Fig and Farr streets
